Leaking pipes from Poland

Project number: 2015-1-ES01-KA219-016273

GROUP COHESION DYNAMIC
NAME:
LEAKING PIPES    from Poland
TIME:
20-30 min
LEVEL:
11 years old
MAIN AIM:
solve a challenge,  teambuilding, assuming roles
DESCRIPTION:

A group of 6 work as a team to solve a challenge. They have a pipe with holes and at the bottom they have a message. They need to fill the pipe with water to get the "duck" to the top so they could take it out. The bucket of water is at some distance and they can only use a cup to bring water. Students should not spill the water because they will not have enough to fill the pipe. They have to close the holes well with their fingers in order not to lose water. They should choose water carriers and those who close the holes in the pipe.
MATERIAL:
You  need a plastic pipe about 10 cm in diameter and 1 m long. Cover on one side. Drill 12-15 holes. One egg surprise - inside plastic egg to put a message inside or just something small that will float on water (a "duck"); a bucket of water – enough to fill the pipe with water plus some extra, 2 cups.
OBSERVATIONS:
You do not say they need to hurry, but when you ask them to start at the same time they automaticaly compete with other teams. It is good to give some time to plan before.
GROUP:
6 groups of 6
DATE:
16-05-2016
GOOD POINTS:
It was a lot of fun.
WEAK POINTS:
Some children got completely wet. If you give just one bucket of water some students may not be able to complete the activity because they may lose the water during the struggle.
OTHER COMMENTS / SUGGESTIONS
You may give a choice of 1 or 2 cups. The group will have to decide a better solution for them – one cup and more fingers to close holes or go faster with 2 cups and have less people to close the holes. You may let them change during the task.
